Growing up, Myriah’s mother is an alcoholic, as well as bipolar, and though the two have a close relationship, it’s codependent, with Myriah’s mom counting on her to be a responsible caretaker and rescuer at all times. One night, when Myriah is a freshman in high school, a neighbor knocks frantically on her door, saying that Myriah’s mom is lying at the bottom of the stairs, passed out with a broken foot. When Myriah goes to find her, her mom has left an enormous trail of blood through the apartment and is incoherent in a chair, her foot horribly bent. Myriah has to play caretaker, investigator and janitor, calling the EMTs, and then, when they don’t return to clean up the biological mess, doing it herself, which is made more difficult because her mom has Hepatitis C.
