In the summer of 2002, Amy hits rock bottom at age 28 following a breakup. At a wedding, she learns about Martin Bergmann, an old-school Freudian rumored to be Woody Allen’s analyst, and decides to see him, thinking it would make her a better writer. During her sessions, Dr. Bergmann makes Ivory Tower sorts of analyses, pointing out she has authority issues because she unknowingly sat in his chair. Amy explores her relationships and sexual experiences with him, despite finding him rather aloof and heady, but eventually she realizes her therapy is misguided, based on the false hope that seeing Woody Allen’s therapist would change her life. She ends her therapy after falling in love with a poor artist and later discovers Bergmann was most likely not Woody Allen’s analyst. Years later, she marries the artist, has a child, and finds a new therapist more fitting to her needs.
