At six, Lucy learns her family is leaving Mexico after her parents’ student visas expire. Waiting in the Canadian embassy library, she builds a picture of Canada from children’s books: blonde hair, blue eyes, igloos, polar bears. Then she lands in Toronto and looks in a bathroom mirror.
