The day after 9/11, David calls the French bistro where he works and finds it packed, so he agrees to work nonstop doubles to earn enough money to rent a U-Haul and leave New York. He passes a 14th Street blockade each day, serves locals who unload their personal anxieties, and after four days makes $900. Walking home drunk to his Bushwick loft with a magnum of wine, he gets grabbed and threatened at gunpoint, but he hides the cash in his bag. When ravers spill into the street, the mugger shoves him away and runs, and David chases him while calling 911 and swinging the wine bottle, shouting that the man looks like Freddy Krueger. The mugger escapes, and David later realizes his Texas ID is stolen, but he stays in New York, moves to Spanish Harlem, and later his burned, damaged ID gets mailed back to his mom with a note wishing him well.
