In the days after 9/11, David works doubles at one of the few open Manhattan restaurants and saves $900 in tips, planning to rent a U-Haul and drive back to Texas. On the walk home to Bushwick from his last shift, drunk and carrying a magnum of red wine, he feels a gun jab between his ribs and a voice in his ear demanding the money.
