Zerman (aka Ernest Anfin) dearly loved his two children, but when he learned that his wife had been cheating on him and stealing from him (and that the children might not be his own) he was devastated and agreed there should be a divorce. But should he lose the custody of his children to someone who had done so much wrong? The courts decided that yes, he should lose custody. One day in the midst of his grief, an old lady who he had always assumed hated him in his building stopped him to tell him what a good father he clearly was. He burst into tears. Being told this by a stranger was hugely cathartic for Zerman, and he felt it was an encounter with the Divine.
